  1. Diabetes tattoo

Heather Clark, a researcher at Draper Laboratories, has developed a tattoo of nanoparticle ink that fluoresces differently in the presence of glucose. With different glucose levels, the nanoparticles change their colors. Hopefully, a technology that will show up sooner rather than later.

  2. Non-invasive glucose measurement

According to MIT, there is new development going on with glucose spectroscopy, hopefully leading to non-invasive glucose measurements. This means: no finger pricks for diabetics. Let's hope that the progress continues.

  3. Support JDRF diabetes research though Pepsi

Pepsi has chosen JDRF as one of three participants in the Pepsi Refresh Challenge, an online campaign to fund worthy non-profit projects that impact children nationally. Three charities are aligned with three National League Football League players. Until midnight tonight, people can vote on the NFL’s website () and via text message (text ‘MARK’ to PEPSI (73774) for one of those three players, with the player/charity receiving the most votes over the course of the week receiving a $100,000 grant.

  4. Blood glucose meter - inside

Page 43 of the December 7, 2009 issue of EE Times has an interesting examination of the internals of a blood glucose meter, specifically the Ascensia Breeze glucose meter manufactured by Bayer AG. What is most interesting is a lack of parts: an NEC 8 bit microcontroller, an ASIC coloumeter, and a 4K serial EEPROM are the only major parts (not counting crystals and capacitors). Looks like they could easily drop the EEPROM and reduce the parts count even further.

  5. Defeat Diabetes Foundation

While picking up Chinese food, I met Andy Mandell who is walking around the United States for diabetes awareness. See his website at defeatdiabetes.org.

  8. Type 1 diabetes cured in mice

According to Scientific American, scientists have had good luck in curing type 1 (juvenile) diabetes in mice by using common cancer drugs.

Here is the abstract from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
